A Proven Partner in Electron Beam Processing
For over 25 years, Mercury Plastics has been at the forefront of electron beam (E-Beam) processing, helping manufacturers enhance material performance in a variety of products. We operate two of the largest electron beam accelerators in North America, backed by an experienced engineering & technical team with a key focus on servicing our customers.
What Is Electron Beam Processing?
Electron beam (e-beam) processing uses accelerated, high-energy electrons to modify the physical and chemical properties of materials, leading to effects like polymer crosslinking, bioburden reduction, or sterilization. The process involves an accelerator creating a beam of electrons that strikes a product, causing beneficial molecular-level changes without creating residual radiation. Key applications include improving polymer strength, bioburden reduction in a variety of products, and sterilization of medical devices.
With both a 5 MeV and a 10 MeV accelerator, we provide cross-linking and irradiation services in an environmentally friendly manner that improves product performance without the need for chemical additives.
Our goal is simple: make it easy for you to get superior results, faster.
Benefits of Irradiation Processing
Enhanced dimensional stability
Resistance to stress cracking & creep
Better wear, abrasion & kink resistance
Longer product life expectancy
Bioburden reduction
Greater tensile & impact strength
Improved chemical resistance
Clean, safe & environmentally friendly results with no harmful byproducts
Key E-Beam Areas of Focus
We focus on key areas where e-beam technology delivers measurable improvements.
Industrial Polymer Modification
Electron beam cross-linking strengthens and stabilizes polymers, helping manufacturers get more durable, reliable performance out of their products.
Wire & Cable
Cross-linking jackets and insulation for electrical, automotive, and industrial cable.
Injection Molded Components
Improving parts used across automotive, electrical, plumbing, and other demanding applications.
Tubing
Improves chemical resistance, increases operating temperature and extends product life.
Raw Material Pellets
Enhancing processability and end-use properties by cross-linking plastic pellets before molding or extrusion.
Cut Film
Supporting shrink film, packaging film, and select medical products in pre-cut formats.
Bioburden Reduction
Electron beam treatment can reduce microbial load without chemicals or harmful byproducts. This makes it an attractive option for industries where cleanliness and safety are critical.
Pet and Agricultural Products
Reducing microbial content in items such as pet food and agricultural goods while maintaining product integrity.
Labware and Glassware
Providing cleaner, safer materials for laboratory use by lowering bioburden without full sterilization.
